DUNEDIN MEETING

WILD HIND WINS THE GUINEAS

NOTES ON THE EVENTS. (BY TELEGRAPH.—SPECIAL TO THE POST ) DUNEDIN, 13th October.

The Dunedin Spring Meeting was concluded in fine weather, and there was an excellent attendance, which completely dwarfed that of the opening day. The track had become firm and fast, as a result of drying winds and fine weather, and some fast time 3 were recorded. The main interest to-day centred in the Dunedin Guineas, for which Gay Juliet was made favourite, but she stopped so far from home as to suggest that she was short of work. On the other hand, Wild Hind stayed on well and really had the finish to herself. The Polymnian did not look so far ward as the others in the field, but he shaped well, and if he stands up to training should do well. Loughrea seemed a trifle sore when he went down in the preliminary for the Ranfurly Handicap, and-this .was probably responsible for him not being able to hold his place in the early part of the race, after getting well away at the start. Limelight had no chance of giving 281b to Baldowa, but the former as usual ran a good genuine race under what was a big weight for one of her inches.

Air. A. ,D. M'lvor did good work at the barrier, and the business of the meeting worked with smoothness.

WAKARI HURDLES.

Red Admiral changed owners before running .in-•the Wakari Hurdles, and carried Mr. A. G. Hill's colours. Frenchman was made favourite in a good betting race. Red Admiral, Frenchman, and Orange Bitters carried on the early running, but the last-named dropped back after going about seven furlongs. Red Admiral was in charge at the far turn, and Falstaff struck heavily when moving up. Red Admiral, drew away as they turned for home, where Galway had moved up to the leaders, and Frenchman dropped away in the run home. Red Admiral staved off Falstaff and beat him by a length; Galway was a. similar distance away and. Orange Bitters a moderate fourth. Faktaff would have been much more dangerous if he had not struck the third last flight of hurdles. Silk Rein was not allowed to start, owing to being in charge of an unlicensed trainer.

LAVA WINS DOMINION HANDICAP.

There was a close call for favourite between Lava and Bachelor Gay in the Dominion Handicap. Bachelor Gay, carrying 9lb over, and Revel began smartest, and after going a couple of furlongs were about three lengths clear of Lava and Apache, whilst All Style and La Reve were a bit further back. Revel and Bachelor Gay were still together as they straightened for home, and they were joined by Lava and Apache at the distance. Revel settled Bachelor Gay at the half-distance, but Lava, finishing on gamely, beat Revel by half a. length. Bachelor Gay was not ridden out when his chance was hopeless, and All Style came on and finished 'third about a length away, with Apache next. The winner is a shapely t filly, got" by Solferino from Formless, by Multiform, and was evidently improved by her first race, as she won well after being a bit slow off the mark. RACE FOR THE GUINEAS. Lucinette was the only one struck out of the field on the card for'the Dunedin-" Guineas. Gay Juliet finished up a rather better fav.burite than''the coupled pair, Owlescombe and Wild Hind, whilst Mr. Greenwood's pair were close up in demand. There seemed to bo very little pace on in the early part of the race. When they settled down The Polymnian and Gay Juliet showed the way to Gold Town and Owlescombo. Wild Hind moved tip as they rounded the top, and was handy to the leaders just as they straightened for home, where Gay Juliet ran wide. Wild Hind ' came away and won comfortably by well over a length from The Polymnian, who beat Parody by nearly two 'lengths. The rest were in a bunch, with Owlescomie just leading them. The favourite ran. disappointingly, but was beaten so far j from home that running wide at the turn made no difference to the result Parody was kept in the rear with Tiff until reaching v the straight, but although nicely, nursed found the journey too far. Wild Hind" stayed on well and looks a possibility fcr more important : engagements. She was got by Autumnus I from Kirriemuir, by_ Clanranald from I Madowla, by Ngaton. DAME STRAITLACE WINS COMFORTABLY. Dame Straitlaco was easily regarded as the pick of the Kaikorai Handicap. Ravenna drew clear after going' about .three furlongs, and turned into the

straight looking a winner, but she failed to stay on, and Dame Straitlace beat her comfortably. Barricorn was easily the best of the others, as he finished close up fourth after being last to leave the mark and having to make up a good deal of ground.

CLOSE FINISH IN THE RANFURLY.

Corn Rigs was elected favourite for the Ranfurly Handicap, Angelo and Loughrea being next in demand. Loughrea was bandaged in front. Prince Ferouz was put in the pen on the outside of the field. Loughrea was first to break the line with Prince Ferouz, but the former dropped back in the first furlong. Corn ; Rigs soon took charge and led Guncase and Angelo into the straight, well clear of Loughrea. and Purple Spur. Angelo had Corn Rigs in trouble at the distance, and looked like scoring an easy win, when Prince Ferouz came with a fast but belated run and got within a neck of the winner. Corn Rigs was stopping at the end and was a length away third. Purple Spur was a fair fourth and Loughrea next. Loughrea lost too much ground over the first three furlongs, and had to give rather much start over the final part of a fast-run race. Boadicea failed to show up, and Guncase faded out after- being prominent until reaching the home turn. TRACK EECOED EQUALLED. Limelight was made a pronounced favourite for the Shorts Handicap, and carried about twice as much support as Baldowa, who went out second favourite. They got away from an excellent line, from which Paphian at once took charge. He piloted Baldowa and Dancing Days to the home turn, where the favourite was making up ground. Bal- [ dowa went to the front at tho distance, and coming on won by about four lengths from Limelight, who was three lengths in front of Paphian. Dancing Days dropped out at the turn, and the placed lot were followed by Kilfane and In the Pink. The winner equalled the track record for the distance held by Songbird and Battle Scene at lmin Msec. j AN EASY WIN. Backers concentrated their attention on Happy Warrior, Radial, and Some Kid in the Telegraph Welter. Pickaninny took charge early. Happy Warrior' was a bit slow on his legs. Miss Muriel supplanted Pickaninny in the lead after rounding the far turn, and going .up the rise Happy Warrior went through the field and leading into the straight came- on to win by six lengths from Some Kid, who got up in time to beat Radial out of second money. Miss Muriel failed to sustain her effort and faded back to a bad fourth, as she was fully ten lengths away from the winner, who is not a boy's horse and shapes well with a good rider up. BARN OWL WINS EASILY. The final"event on the* caz-d was regarded as an open race. Wartune finished, up a better . favourite than Barn Owl. Tionc, _ Eaton Bells, and King Sol also received good support, and when it came to business Barn Owl, switching her tail all the way, was always prominent, and came on to win by the good stretch of daylight of four lengths between her and Wartuno, who got up in time to beat Valdamo a length. Valdamo was. always going well until reaching the straight, when he failed in the last fifty' yards.. Tione was fairly close up three furlongs from home, but failed to get amongst the money at the business" end. Eaton Bells had her chance extinguished- by being slow off the mark. The winner is regarded as a fairly good class filly, and if she settles down, to her work is sure of further distinction. ■ /

The totalisator handled £28,719, compared . with £31,050 ;on the second day of last year, making a total for the meeting of £45,979, as compared with £50,252 last year. It is understood that Silver Peak will be Retired from the Turf, and will visit Solferino this season.
