EASTBOURNE FERRY SERVICE

The fleet in the Eastbourne Borough Council s ferry service during the past two months has been undergoing an extensive overhaul, the cost of i-.hich is being defrayed out of the ferry Joan raised to purchase the Muritai and recondition the Duchess and Cobar. The Cobar is again aiming _ in the service, having been fitted with a' larger propeller, a cargo hatchway, and other improvements. The Duchess is now laid up at the Qnens Wharf, where the e ls and boiler have been removed preparatory to placing a new boiler in the vessel and replacing any part of the structure which requires renewal, for which purpose she goes on the Slip on Monday It is estimated that the work will take about eleven weeks to complete from the time it was first started, about a fortnight ago. _ Councillors have not seen eye-to-eve in regard to the method by which the work should be carried out, some considering day labour to be best and others declaring for contract. Councillor Bowden has now given notice of his intention to move at the next meeting of the council as follows:—"That it be an instruction to the general manager that in future specifications be formulated and submitted, and tenders called for all works in connection with overhaul and renovations to ferry fleet, and also for all permanent borough works which do not come within the category of general maintenance."
