EFFECTS OF THE EARTHQUAKE
STRENGTH NOT DIMINISHED
OFFICIAL AMERICAN REPORT.
(UNITED TRESS ASSOCIATION.—COPTRIGHT.)
(AUSTRALIAN-NEW ZEALAND CABLE ASSOCIATION.) TOKIO, 11th October.
The Navy' Department has stated that although the Japanese Navy losses in the earthquake were considerable, the naval power of Japan has not been weakened as a result. The warships Amagi, Mikasa, and Naka, sustained the most serious damage. The provision of 11,000,000 yen (nominally £1,----000,000) on the estimates for the construction of the Naka has been suspended. The Mikasa will be repaired and used as a target ship, while the Amagi will be replaced. The destroyed naval institutions include the technical laboratory, the hydrographic office, medical college, and powder magazine-, and arsenal at Yokohama. Though badly damaged, they will immediately be repaired. J
