CHAMPIONS' RACE
PAPYRUS'S GOOD WORK ON THE
TRACK.
(UNHID PRESS ASSOCIATION.—COPTRIGnT.)
CADSTRALIAN - NEW 7».UAND CA3LJ ASSOCIATION.!
NEW YORK, 11th October. Papyrus startlingly surprised those who two days ago prophesied that he would prove a poor opponent for Zev. Papyrus at to-day's work-out covered a mile and a furlong in lmin 54 4-ssec without being extended, and pulled up full of running. The British horse was giving his stable mate Bar Gold a lead of half a furlong, and breaking from the standard position, picked up hia opponent, before half a mile had been covered going_ by the latter as if he were standing still. This work-out was so impressive that it is considered possible if the horse, maintains the showing during the coming week he will enter the race favourite.
Zev, whose condition is splendid is also showing great, speed. Yesterday he covered a mile and a quarter in 2min 6 2-ssec.
Papyrus was somewhat sore after his work-out to-day, _ and very slight lameness was noted m his near fore ankle, indicating that the hard dirt track where the race will be held, is having an adverse effect on the horse. Jarvis, while plainly worried over his condition is hopeful that Papyrus will quickly re cover and come to the post fit * cn Vs2°l c5 rs e e dc. a *** a furlw * in
