THE NEW PRISON SITE

TO THE EDITOR. .Sir,—l, like most of the ordinary citizens of Wellington, have been sorely put to in. thinking out a rational reason for objecting to the Mount Crawford Prison site. The most valuable residential properties in the city have grown up around | the old Terrace Gaol, and that locality has long been noted as one of the quiet- ! est and best residential areas in Wellingj ton. ■ So why all this'fuss? Is it that ™ are developing a snuffling snobbery that seeks to deny that a. few criminally unfortunato exist among our population, and hiding the fact from public gaze? The' deputationists seem to forget that the future residents at Mount Crawford are to be involuntary guests, but there is nothing to prevent those who object to their neighbours .seeking another locality. It ra recognised, by, most of our citizens with vision beyond the suburban coteries, that dignify themselves by the euphonious titles of "advancement associations," the future of Wellington in its development to a great city lies in reclaiming a belt of land -between one half and a mile wide along the foreshore from the present reclamation to Petone. To give' effect to the suggestions of the deputation, which recently waited on the Minister, that the prison site be removed to Ngahauranga, would be to place it, in this writer's opinion, about the re tre of the business portion of Wellington, A.D., 1950.—1 am, etc., .■■.', R.D.A.
