The final singles matches in 5 the Davis Cup challenge series between Australia and the United States were played'today at Forest Hills. Both the Australian players were defeated, the United States thus retaining the cup by having won 4 matches to 1. The weather was gloriously warm, and there was a large attendance owing to a pubiic holiday. W. ,H. Johnston (America) defeated [J.B. Hawkes (Australia), 6-0/ 6-2, 6-2. In the first set Johnston broke through Hawkes's service and .won the first game after Hawkes had pulled up to deuce from love-forty. ■ Four straight nets gave Johnston the second game. In the third game Havkes played wild, and .Johnston broke through a love game to lead 3-0. With smashing forehand drives Johnston took the fourth game, losing only a point. The American was smashing with deadly accuracy and scoring repeatedly at the net. Johnston broke through Hawkes's service again, taking the fifth game, and then the American won '.he sixth game and the set 6-0. - ■ Hawkes.took the.first game of the second set off his own service, Johnston making four straight errors.
