SETTLEMENT
EXTENSIVE STOPPAGE OF WORK.
(TOITSB PRESS ASSOCIATION.— COPTBIQHT.)
(AUSTRALIAN • NEW ZEALAND CABLE ASSOCIATION.) NEW YORK, 2nd September. According to a message from Harrisburg, miners and operators have only partially-accepted Governor Pischot's plan for a settlement. More than 50,000 miners have;suspended work, and the number is expected' to reach a full 158,000 of those, engaged in anthracite mining by midnight. The miners demanded an increase in wages varying from 20 to 50 per cent., ,the adoption of the "check off" system, and various other technical changes in working conditions. The "check off" is proving the greatest obstacle, the operators refusing to accept it. The miners later agreed to smaller increases in wages. A telegram from Philadelphia says that while the union leaders and the operators are conferring in an eude.ivI our to reach an agreement en a new [wage contract to replace^ the one which ihas expired, an army of ""men in" the anthracite coal fields will quit work, and i will not leturn antilan understanding has [been reached. In all, 155,000 men are > affected. '
Reports indicate that the suspension of work' is total, and no company has announced that it will attempt to "carry on. -
