STAR BOATING CLUB

PAST YEAR'S ACTIVITIES.

.The annual report of the Star BoatIng Club; to be presented at the annual meeting on the 31st August, states that the committee regrets it is unable to report any improvement in club finance, the position being very much the same as that, of twelve monthß ago. Outstanding accounts amount to £M;-y6s; 6d, against which can be set outstanding subBcriirtions of £113 12s. The heaviest iteifi of expenditure had been that of maintenance, which inclusive of wages amounted to £221 Os Id. The net cost ; of''new.- plant was; £84 7s 8d; The bal- ! ance of assets over liabilities was £1963 ■5s 3d." There was .still £125 of debentures unallotted. ,-The clubhouse committee'is to be congratulated on the result i b{ its year's work, the funds in hand* amounting to £24 14s lid.' This sinnPis 4 leing held meantime, improvements to &he floor of the main clubroom being con-; . tonplated at an early date. The mem> terebip of the club now stands at:32l, made np as follows: 59• life acti#ej-'lOß' iaotrve, 59 honorary, 54 ,hi*rforaty^ and 41 country. Forty-one V members' joined the club during lastvjtear:? .With the exception of the junior double sculls, 1 hi) club races were rowed during l'';thej Season. Good entries were received for. moat of the events, but on account of the: lack of interest of a number of members &nd the inability of strokes to keep their crews together, a considerable-number ofscratchings were necessary. "The;novice pairs race was revived, and it was pleasing to note the interest and enthusiasm displayed by new members. With this, and one or two other «xcep' : tiqns, however, the training done for club races was very ; poor. The club was represented at regattas held at Pieton, Wellington, and Wanga; niii, and was successful at Picton in the raaideV fours, pairs, and-doubles. The only other win during the season twas obtained by the maiden doublei-at Wangatiui—the crew being 'placed. second at the Wellington -Regatta. ■■■ The resultson the whole were far from satisfactory,^ although the maiden double crew is to be congratulated on its consistent training during the year, and the maiden four and pair crews on their showing. at Picton, undoubtedly due to' the special training undertaken.

.The committee regrets to report that the club has not yet won the Mothes Shield, but congratulates most heartily the Wellington Club upon its outstanding success in both of the contests for the ;trophy. 'Thirteen dances -were held during the season, and showed a ■ considerable improvement en those' held d\jring tbe previous 'season. The annual ball was again held, and, although an unqualified social-success, was not quite «elf-«upporting. The presentation of trophies again took the form of a.smoke concert, and, as usual, was a most successful event. A billiard tournament, the trophy for which was donated by Mr. Bayfeild, was held, the winner being Mr. :Fenton. A,pleasant afternoon was held at Petone on the occasion of the swimming sports. The championship for the J. G. Duncan Cup was won by Mr. E. H. Zohrab.' The' thanks of:the club are extended to the Picton Rowing Club for their hospitality at the thne_ of their regatta; to the Petone Rowing Club for the use. of their clnbTopm on the occasion of the swimming sports, also for housing a boat for, training purposes; and to the Wanganui Rowing Clnb for their hospitality to members. In accordance with a previous resolution of a general v meeting, a brass tablet has been ordered "as a memorial to those members who fell during the war. The tablet will be erected in the clubhouse, and will be unveiled at an early date. The club-was unfortunatel in losing the services of Mr. Shorland as deputy-captain. Mr. D. M'Grath was appointed to the position, and Mr. Dobson filled the vacancy' on the ; general committee. During the season a reunion of. old members was held in the form of a dinner. At this function a Memorial Cup was donated to th e club as a trophy for the whaleboat race. The re-nnion,was such a great success that it was decided to hold the function annually. ■
