MARAMA RETURNS TO PORT
PASSENGERS TRANSFERRED TO
NIAGARA.
(BT TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION.)
AUCKLAND, 24th August. The Marama sailed for Sydney at. 11.30 o'clock this morning, but returned to port at 1.45 o'clock, owing to the stokehold -crew refusing duty. . The ship remains at her anchorage, and her 240 passengers and mails were/transferred to the Niagara, which will leave to-night. The cause of the trouble was the presence of a non-unionist in the stokehold. Upon the vessel's return to harbour this man said h e would sign off, but the other men then raised, new grievances. They refused to sail with Captain Clift, presumably because ho had ordered" the ringleader off the bridge when ha arrived to make the complaint when the ship was leaving the wharf.
The thirfcy-orje stokers have been arrested on a charge of refusing duty on the high seas, their disobedience having taken place outside the three-mile limit. Ihey will come before the Court tomorrow, i
In the meantime it is not known when the Marama .will get away for Sydney, as her passengers were able to transfer to the Niagara without delay.
