MINISTER xMAKES SOME COM' PARISONS.

The Government's expenditure upon the Wellington .Technical School, was referred to in the House of Representatives last night by Mr. A. L. .Monteith (Wellington East), . who stressed • the need for the accommodation to relieve congestion. ' '

The Minister of Education ('the Hon. 0. J. Parr) said that the Wellington iechnical School authorities were demanding £34,000 for the Provision of further accommodation. The total' expenditure upon the Auckland Technical School to date-was £42,000, and that upon the Wellington and Dunedin Colleges £51,000 and £39,000 respectively Eraser (Wellington Central) : What about "the difference in the cost of building?" ' ; Mr. Parr pointed out that the ex. penditure upon the Wellington College was £9000 more than that in any othlr centre. ■ On; top of that the Govern£lfnnnas^ ci" g .afu ed for a further ±^4,000. Adding to the amount already provided the value of the site of the school (£17,000), which was a free gift from the Prisons Department, altogether the amount given to thd 1 school was £68,000. . '

Fraser (Wellington Central) said that of the.£sl,ooo granted to the college only £35,363 had been handed over in actual cash by the Government, lo leaver the position at* the school as it was at present was most uneconomical and foolish. If the Government was opposed to providing something more on the Estimates he urged that the Minister should permit, representatives of the board to consult with him after the session with the idea; of making some sort of accommodation-. The Minister said, that he could not make any promise of any further grant this year. .The maximum had been reached for the year in the way of grants to that institution.
