REACHING NORMAL
CONDITIONS IN U.S.A.
GETTING BACK TO PRE-WAR.
(81, IELianAPB.—SPECIAL 10 THE POST') • . . . AUCKLAND, Thi s Day. TJ^ til itT" that - ?°ndi«°n« in the United States are rapidly reaching normal^ was expressed yesterday, by Mr ? S A. Cheney niotor importer, of Melbourne, who is returning by the Nia Kara to Australia after V visit to th^ J7 n£t«J f States and, Canada! He Yen* tioned that he visited many of the arge automobile factories in both Canada and the United States and found the indnstrv in a prosperous condition.. In United States trade was healthy and the coun try was in for a more stable period than rl ' I j ,exP e»enced for some time SUT^ «6en Btrenuou? efforts to cope 1 wth the after-war demand'for all sorts of products, and the shortage had about bean-overtaken. This was Specially noticeable in the building trade. On the occasion of a visit.in- 1920,' he found that office and warehouse space in: New York was at a premium, but- in* the meantime building had gone on at such a rate that tenants now had the choice of suites in almost all parts of the city and at somewhat lower rentals. This also applied to apartment houses, for there had been quite a boom in this form of enterprise. Asked as to conditions on Wall Street where a number of failures have recently been reported Mr. Cheney said that business in that quarter was a sound one. None of the well-established firms had any cause to worry. It would be almost correct to say conditions in the United States to-day very nearly approximate pre-war conditions. He did not think anything in the nature of a slump was likely, nor did he anticipate that there would be anything approaching a boom.
