FINAL DAY

THE C.J.C. MEETING

LINCOLN STEEPLES TO OMAHU

DECLINE IN TOTALISATOR INVEST- -■ ■'- --;- MENT&V

(It .TELEGRAPH.—SHCMIi TO 111 KIT.) CHRISTCHURCH, 18th August. The Christchurch Jockey Club's Grand National Meeting was brought to a close * to-day in glorious weather—the best of the whole week.' There was a good .at-; tendance, though-many visitors had gone home.: The fields kept up well, and some V good racing was witnessed. The totalifeatpV investments were £58,701/ making a fatal for the meeting of £173,565, comparedl with £189,023 last year. HIGHWEIGHT HANDICAP. The racing opened iwith the Longbeach High weight Handicap, for 1 which the field numbered nine. Barmaid and Birkenella were evenly backed. Linmark end, AUeyne took turns in front for the . half-mile, when Linmark drew out clear and led to the straight. Birkenella then challenged him, and, drawing away at_ the distance, he won decisively by a length. was running on in third place with Chinatown, Agnola and Parorangi close up. The winner has the reputation of being non-stayer, but he represents better class 'than the ot".iers. In addition, he was well handled, while* the gentlemen, riders on .some of the others did not cover themselves with glory-"' . ; AYLESBURY STEEPLECHASE: A field of ten took part in the Aylesbury Steeplechase, representing a fair hack class. The consistent Tokomairiro was. a decided favourite, though Birkwick, Noble, and' Blue Hall also came in. for solid- support. Trouble started early, and Raumanuwhiri fell at the first - fence, and it-looked as if Blue Streak and. Blue Hall fell over her, while Ready went out at the_ first of the Kennels double. Tokomairiro, Birkwick, Noble, , aud Malincourt raced in close order, with Rhoboro closing up, till they came to the Kennels double the next time, when Rhoboro and Birkwjck came to'grief. j\oble and .Tokomairiro rose to the last fence 'together, but the latter made a faulty jump, and Noble' beat him home by four lengths. Bill was six, lengths away, with Malincourt a poor fourth. Tke winner, gave an even exhibition.of jumping. Birkwick has started in four steeplechases, during the present visit to Riccarton, arid has not got round yet. The jumping in the minor steeplechases at this meeting has been poor. A DEAD HEAT. ' .In a field of twelve for the Heath cote Handicap, L'Amour'was a little better .backed than Sunny Loch; with Carmine easily third choice.- Jazz begai* smartly; and led Guncase along the back,-with Sunny Loch and Some Kid heading the others. Guncase to6k charge on reaching the straight, where L'Amour and Whipping Boy also became prominent. L'Amour drew out at the distance, but Sunny Loch then commenced a brilliant run, which just enabled him to dead heat_ with L'Amour in the last stride. Whipping ■Boy'r-wasstwo.'lengths •i.way? with Guncase, Petunia, and Some Kid close up. L'Amour improved as the meeting progressed, and looks like doing still better. The-^performance of Sunny Loch was highly'attractive under his big weight. Whipping Boy may pick up a stake (soon. Guncase had every thance, but he was stopping at the end. Carmine was a great disappointment; as he never looked dangerous.: Petunia ran a great , race after being' badly- left at the start. Fabrinade was showing up at the home turn, but failed to run on: . . ':. STYX HURDLES HANDICAP. The eight hacks who lined up for the Styx Hur,dTe". Handicap were a mixed lot. Cheer" Up wound up: a strong favour, with Bon Spec and Carawock evenly fancied. Bon Spec, Jed over the first hurdle, with Frenchman and Sher- : lock handy. Frenchman was done half a mile from home, where Carawoek was just behind the two leaders. Cheer Up joined in at the last hurdle, and drew away to beat Bon Spec by over a length; Carawoek two lengths away, with Irenchman next. The winner's record on the present trip has been consistent . as h e also won; at the Christchurch Hunt Meeting, while he was not far behind the placed lot in- the Grand. National Hurdles. He.Ms a-very useful customer Bon Spec,", who was making his first appearance.as ,a hurdler, put in a tremendous < jump. atvtKe, first ■ flight,-- but ( afterwards jumped well. He will win very soon. Carawock ran:a decent race.. BLACK'ART WINS SYDENHAM s HURDLES. The Sydenham Eturdle' Haadicap Jdi-ew the good field of ten. General Advance, feter Amans, and Tinokaha were fancied in that order: Gamecock .and. Falstaff led Peter "Amans and Black Art-past the stand, and were still showing the way as they turned into the back stretch ■where the first-named pair drew out well ?i«« of, the others- Blwk Art was in third place at the seven furlong post and he was in front t\yo furlongs further on, where Gamecock made a bad jump '■ ? , ?* s and G«neral Advance were just behind Black Art as they turned lor home, and they were together at, the' last hurdle. General Advance then failed under the weight, and Black Art just lasted long enough to beat Blue Socks by, a short neck. General Advance was threalength S/ away, with 1 Peter Amans and Malingerer next. Black Art ran a fair race in the Grand National Hurdles and the shorter journey -was doubtless m his favour. Gamecock failed to see ' wnr!° UT? oU, tl as d£d Fai^«. who r1 v iet'?r iater on- Cerberus was If * .the way- Tinokaha was left at the start; OMAHU'S PACE WINS LINCOLN STEEPLECHASE. The scratching of Red Cent left seven starters for the Lincalr Steeplechase. M«7" P -jS" 11* b«*«»g race between Master Peter^ Omahu, Oakleigh, and First Line Trouble started early. Zeus led over Cutts's, the first fence, bTt stumbled and lost his rider when he iSw- ♦ Tn- he app ueared to sei Unsw with First Line, who was carried out, to the trees, losing about a furlong. Ra.umanuwhin bucked over the first fence and stopped at the next. In the mean.time Master Peter had taken charge "Trom Omahu, Oakleigh, and Isla Banl, these four running in close order. Omahu was jumping badly, but making up groind .with his pace on the' flat, while Oakleigh was fencing brilliantly, though he;blundered at the sod wall following the Kennels double. There was no great changetill they reached the post and rails the next time round, where First Line was handy. Oakleigh jumped to second-place at the Kennels" double, but nearly • losij his rider at the sod wall, . completely settling his chance. Master Peter had a slight advantage over Omahu at the last fence, but Oniahu wore him down arid won by a length. Oakleigh was close up, with First Line fourth and Isla Bank last. Omahu owed his success to his pace, as his jumping was bad.

It came as a surprise to find Oakleigh blunder twice at the sod wall; the second.; mistake was a bad one. With a good jump there he would have been dangerous. ■■: ■ •;.-■.' ■ i ! REDCLIFFS HANDICAP TO HAPPY WARRIOR. .. - ■■■ :■-, A dozen fair hacks took part in the Redchffs Handicap, Warseer, Santiago, .and Contempt being fancied in that order. Woreeer was first out, followed by Dame Straitlace, Saratov, and Kilfane. There was no. change to the home turn, where Contempt, Santiago, and Happy Warrior were also showing up. Happy Warriov finished on fast, and beat Warseer in the last few strides by half a length. Contempt was olose up, just in front of Kilfane, Santiago, and Ku-' kume. The winner was stopping at the end of six furlongs on Wednesday, when He finished third, but he was evidently benefited by that race, as on this occasion he ran out the seven furlongs solidly. Warseer, .on the other hand was stopping. Santiago was a trifle slow in jumping out, and this prejudiced his chances. FINAL EVENT WON BY TINI- ■ HANGA. '. ■ ■ ■ The Selwyn Handicap, the concluding event of the meeting, drew a .field of ten, Bon Spec and Guncase being withdrawn. Pitprop wound up a strong favourite with Paphian, Santonio, and Dancing Days . best backed among the others. PaDhian and Dancing Dayß, two speedy sprinters, showed the way in the early stages, with Santonio and Mountain Sig"nal also prominent. Santonio looked a winner a- hundred yards from the post but Tinihanga came with a great run and: won narrowly from Santonio and Paphian, with 1* Mountain Signal, Dancing Days, and Bpnny Mac close up. The winner, a five-year-old mare by Absurd, had a big reputation when trained by L. Wilson for the Douglas Estate. She was bought for 120 guineas by Mr. Q. B. Starky a few months ago, and is now a bargain, with her stud value ahead i of her. Fitprpp was showing signs of lameness .when he came in, and doubtless this accounted for his poor showing".
