PERSONAL MATTERS
Mr. R. W. Gilbert arrived from South Africa via Australia, by the Moeraki this morning. V.
Reference was made" by the Mayor, Mr. R. A. Wright, at last, evening's meeting of the City Council, of the loss sustained by Councillor G., Mitchell in the death of his wife after a long and serious illness. A letter 'expressing the condolence and sympathy of the Mayor and council is to be sent to Councillor Mitchell.
Messrs. G. Lauchlan and R. F. Maunder, of the City Corporation's Tramway and Electric Lighting Department, and Mr. D. Parnell, of the Engineer's Department, have been appointed members of the Advisory Committee of the Wellington Technical College—Messrs. Lauchlan and Maunder to the electric engineering section and Mr. Parnell to the plumbing section.
Mr. Thomas Rae, of the staff of the Hon. J. G. Coates, Minister of Public Works, who has been in indifferent health for some months past, died last night' at his residence in Roseneath. The deceased saw service in the Boer War tv. -d** 10- imperial Forces, and joined the Public ■ Service on coming to New Zealand from South Africa, He served on Gallipoli with the New ZealanderE, and was sent back to England after being wounded. The late Mr. Rae, who was well known in swimming and yachtmg circles, is survived by his widow.
At a large gathering of members of the Commercial Travellers' Club this morning, a presentation was made to Mr. J. C. Tonks, late director of Messrs. W. M. bannatyne. and Co., Ltd., who with his wife and family are leaving to-day for bydney. Mr. Tonks is entering into business on his own account. Many complimentary remarks were made by members as to Mr. Tonks's work for charity and other efforts with.the Commercial Travellers' Club. Mr. R. Wilson, president of the United Association, made a presentation to Mr. Tonks.
The death occurred at his residence, Hiropi street, Wellington, yesterday of Mr. Francis, E. ■ Fauvel, of the staff of the firm of Briscoe and Co., Ltd. The cause of death was pneumonia. After tlireo years' war service, Mr. Fauvel was invalided home suffering from trench fever and the effects of gas. The late Mr. Fauvel, who was a son of Mr. Francis. Fauvel, of this city, was. a member of the Newtown Congregational Umrch. and was prominently .connected with all that concerned the young people of the church. He was also a member of the Masonic Order. Prior to proceeding to the front in 1915, he married'a daughter of Mr. A. M. Lewis,'of Thompson, Lewie, and Co., Ltd. He leaves a widow and three children.
