ANALYSIS OF PETONE GAS.
_ The following report on the composition and quality of gas at the Petona works was received at yesterday's meeting of the Petone and Hutt Gas Lightnig Board from Mr. H. Bands, chemist to the Wellington Gas Company: "On Friday, the 27th instant, I visited the Petone gasworks at the "request of the manager, Mr. Appleyard; and collected a sample of the g; 6 for analysis. I. also carried out-a- calorimetric test for the heating value of the gas with the Junker calorimeter installed on the works.' The gas was drawn from the outlet of the station meter, and represents the quality of the gas on being manufactured at that time (10.30 to 11.30 a.m.). The result of the analysis (carried out in the Miraniar Laboratory) is as follows:—Carbon dioxide, 2.2 per cent.-by volume; heavy hydrocarbons -(benzine, etc.), 2.0; oxygen, 2.0; carbon monoxide, 6.8; methane, 36.9; hydrogen, 29.5; nitrogen; 18.6. "The calorific value of the gas as calculated from this analysis is 579 British thermal units per cubic foot gross. The result of, the, calorimetric test with the Junker calorimeter was 588 British thermal units per cubic foot gross. This represents a gas of excellent .quality, Co™»P°nding ■• to: 15-16: ,caod)e-powe* under the old lighting power standard "
