THE SUCCESSION

MR. COOLIDGE TAKES CHARGE

NUMEROUS LARGE PROBLEMS.

WASHINGTON, lith August President Coolidge returned, to tha Capital to-day, actually to take over the affairs of State, The new Executive is faced by numerous problems which Mr. Harding left undecided, including, first, a threatened rtrike on the har4 coal fields; second, the Ruhr and reparation* situation'; third, an extra Congressional session to deal with the acute agricultural situation, which is -demanded by the farm bloc; fourth, the impending recognition of Mexico; fifth, a probable realignment of Cabinet; sixth, the policy of the World Court; seventh, the formulation of domestic legislative policies; eighth, the Prohibition enforcement realignment. On the way President Coolidge handles these matters depends the .question of his. renomiuation by the Republicans next June, when candidates will bd chosen for the next Presidential term.

Many political loaders •contend that [ the whole success of the President's administration and the possibility of his re-election depend on the handling o f the coal situation. While ex-Presiaeiii iiardmg s body was crossing the country, a constant stream of politicians endeavoured to see President- Coolidge to learn his views ;nd inform him of theirs Prominent among these were the irreconcilables who oppiise the participation of the- United Staw s in the World Court. Jhe President, however, has so far refused to express himself on this or any other subject. Wh'to. House announces that, the present Cabinet will be retained.
