, CHICAGO, 9th August. In the third set of the Davis Cup preliminary between J. 0. Anderson (Australia) and Masomosuku Fukuda (Japan) the game rapidly became a battle, both men fighting bitterly. Anderson broke through the Japanese service, winning the second game easily. Anderson continued winning by the pace of his own sr^Vice, and won the tourth by sheer brilligncy of play. In the sixth Fukuda quickly came back, but only for one game, Anderson's errors contributing to the Japanese win.
In the fourth set Anderson showed his complete superiority over the Japanese. He calmly won the first three games,' and serve! the drop-cut serve adopted by players for amusement' showing that he did not consider Fukuda formidable.
