When the Earl of Crawford was installed in office as Chancellor of Manchester University, there were four English universities with Scotsmen at their heads. Lord Crawford-is-closely connected with Lancashire, and has an estate near Wigan, but for all that, he is a Scot, and was born at Dunechi* House, Aberdeenshire. Lord Rosebery is Chancellor of London University, Lord Balfour holds a similar position at Cambridge, and Lord Haldanc is the chosen of Bristol University
