FIRST PRIZE ESSAY. (Written by GEORGE I. JOSEPH, age 134 rears, pupil of Wellington College.) "^POB^M^P SHOULD SUPGROCE^ SELF-HELP CO-OP. Most of. us are acquainted with £_^Jsw_Hart: \ht o?^» Sk£ c, <?J>° l weTer. the price-' list of the Self-Help Co-op. Grocery" eufficos to chow that there is a "nivl^al responding increase in the price of Tn«_fH# ls r larSely trough this that the Self-Hefp Co-op. Grocery" has attained a^high and venerable position in WeflmßBut there are other reasons, far more vital reasons, why these stores should bS so largely patronised. It is a fact of common knowledge that tho average shop! ■per dishing a long wait before being served. The ample number of assistants maintained by each ensures prompt eervice to every customer. In addition to this, courtesy is never lacking in the way tho assistant serves his customer, and th_ courtesy is B ure to bias hini in favour of shopping- there again. favour oi annoying to a shopper than to be presented with an article, which, as the suave grocer says, "is just as good." There is none of this paiming-off of imitations on customers at the "Self-Help Stores." These are only a few of the many reasons why-the■ "Self.Help Stores" have To many satisfied customers. Wo will now take a glance at the principles upon which such a business is organised. It is indeed a. wonderful organisation working smoothly and easily,, hke a well-oiled piece of machinery. . " In the first place, all the stores are equipped with the latest and most-up-to-date appliances which ensure quick service. The publio quite rightly admires a progressive store. Besides this, the adequate arrangements made for the keeoinir fresh of eggs, butter, etc., guarantee % fresh supply of these goods being always on hand. The "no-credit" system is also a modern idea, the success of which is amply demonstrated in its application to various public works, such as the milk-supply. It enables the price of all goods to bo kept at a minimum, since the cost o£ accountbooks, invoices, etc., which are indispensable to the upkeep of a credit business is entirely obviated. Another custom of this Store, and one that has caused not a little discussion among shop-goers, is- the policy of making purchasers bring their own'wrappingpaper. Not a few people have expressod discontent at this, a discontent which, in my opinion, is entirely groundless. Surely it is little or no trouble to bring a piece of ordinary newspaper! A vast saving in paper is thus effected, which reflects on the price of the goods in no small degree. From what has been previously said, it will be evident that a Store like tho "Self-Help Co-op. Store" is a store thoroughly meriting a large clientele. It has boon shown to be essentially modern and up-to-date;, to be abundantly stocked, and to be furnished with an ample 6taff of trained assistants. In addition to this, the courtesy and promptitude of the assistant and the low prices of the stores, have been important factors in determining the supromacy of this Store, which, since- it has shown itself so omoieht. in supplying the wants of Wellington shop-goers, may soon extend itself to be a Dominion-wide- organisation.
