"REALLY A TRAGEDY"

TRAFFIC IN ADELAIDE ROAD,

, A representative of a number of motorists waited on a "Post" reporter this morning with a. view to drawing attention, to the traffic conditions in the early evenings m Adelaide road and Riddifoid street. It is reuJly a tragedy," stated the motorist. He said that after the Hutt road accident, and the prosecution of vehicle drivers on that road for not carrying lights they thought some attention should be given to the main city thoroughfares. He said that it was quite usual between 5 and 6 p.m. to see a stream of horse-drawn and motcr vehicles extending for half a mile up Adelaide road, in addition to tramcars—that is it would be possible to see the stream •for that distance if the fog and smoke which so often descended on the city ■ at that hour permitted it. The trouble was that in most cases the vehicles could not be seen by motor-car drivers, and they used the road in fear for their lives for so many of the lorry-drivers did not use lights at the rear of their vehicles In fact,, he alleged that many of them did not have lamps attached to their vehicles for use in case they were wanted; Our informant stated that the present traffic inspectors were doing their best, but there was too much work for .them, afld they could not be expected to cope, with all the offenders. He did not know how a serious accident had been avoided so long. The motorist also entered a further complaint in connection with Courteuav place. He stated that the police said a man was always stationed there if there w was one available, but the position was that a man was very often not stationed there, and the motorists did not know whether on approaching the busy centre of tramc they were to rely on being directed, or whether they had to look out for themselves.
