PRISONER RECAPTURED
AFTER A THRILLING CHASE.

. , WHAKATANE, 10th August. Frank Ballar, alias Duane, aged 21 who made a sensational escape from Mount Eden Gaol, Auckland, in the early morning of 21st July, was smartly recaptured by Detective M'Leod, Constable Cummings, and some volunteer assistants here to-day. Ballar was suspected of committing burglaries at Opotiki and Whakatane.
Detective M'Leod and Constable Cummings, who.were returning from Matata, saw the suspected man, and gave chase. Ballar ran to the river, divested himself of his boots and coat, plunged in, and swam across.
Freezing works employees and a Maori gave valuable assistance in searching the sandhills. One of the search party was knocked down when at close grips with Ballar, who was finally caught, and taken into custody. Practically all the loot of the two Tobbenes was recovered, and the prisoner has admitted his guilt.
