STREET TRAGEDY
LITTLE BOY KILLED BY A MOTOR-
LORRY.
Upper Willis street .was the scene of a tragedy last evening, . when the five-year-old son of Mr. R. H. Young, chemist, of 311, Willis street, was struck by a motor-lorry driven by Harry Courtney Scaife, and sustained injuries from which he died within a few minutes. The accident occurred about 4.20 p.m. The boy was attempting to cross Willis street, going towards his father's residence, but on reaching the centre of the road turned back. A motor-lorry containing two tons of coal was at the moment being driven up Willis street, and when the little boy turned was some 15 yards from Mm. Scaife swerved and tried to avoid him, but the splashboard hit him. Whether the lorry passed over deceased was not known. The lorry was travelling at a rate of approximately ten miles per hour. Thb small lad was immediately picked up by the driver, and taken to his ' father's residence, and Dr. Robertson was called, but nothing could be done.
An unfortunate aspect was that the little fellow had disobeyed his father, who had, a few minutes earlier, told him to leave the street. An inquest will be opened this afternoon.
