NEARLY A DISASTER
LOCOMOTIVE BREAKS DOWN.
(Received 7th August, 10 a.m.)
NEW YORK, 6th,August. It is reported from Chappel (Nebraska) that the special train bearing the remains of the late President narrowly escaped being -wrecked when the tire of the driving wheels of the locomotive tore loose. Experts said later that several more revolutions of the wheel would have forced the train off the track.
Meanwhile, during an hour's delay for repairs, a fierce hailstorm broke loose, pelting the roof of the train with stones the size of pigeon eggs. Then a rainbow appeared, and the train started, only to run into another hailstorm, which darkened the landscape for miles around.
