SOCIETY OF MUSICIANS

The council of the Society of Musicians, in its annual report, states that it has decided to entertain visiting musicians of recognised distinction as opportunity may offer from time to time. One of the activities of the society has been tho arrangement of a string quartette for the playing of chamber music, which will prove of groat advantage in this city in furthering high-class performances. During the year three members left for England to pursue their studies, viz. ■ Miss Driscoll, Miss M'Enroe, and Miss Esquilant, and these ladies -were tendered a farewell at a social evening.. The council has not been able to make permanent arrangements for the housing of the library, but negotiations are now pending which it is hoped will be successful. It has been decided to subscribe, to two magazines, viz., "TJio Chesterion" and "The Music Teacher" ; also to purchase quartette music for use of members as occasion may arise. During the year 15 members were added to the roll—l 2 professional arid three amateur—and the number now on the roll stands at 88. There are seven new members to be added to the roll for the _ present year. A suggestion was received from tho War Memorial Committee for a donation to this fund, but as it was found that the rules of the society prevented such a payment bein" made, an individual appeal was made to the members by the president, the response to date resulting in the sum of about £28 being raised.
