LITERARY AND DEBATING SOCIETY
The Brooklyn Methodist Musical, Literary, and Debating Society held its fortnightly meeting on Monday evening in the Methodist Church. Sir. T. Coventry presided over a large attendance. A very interesting lecture was given by Mr. H. Phipps on the lives and compositions of Handel and Mendelssohn, supported by instrumental and vocal items, from the works of both composers. Vocalitems were rendered by Mrs. T. Coventry, Mrs. Bond, and MeEsrs. Groudie, Brown, and Phipps; also violin solos by Mr. Langley. At th e close of the lecture a hearty vote of thanks was.accorded to Mr. Phipps and those who had assisted him in making the evening one of the most enjoyable of the year.
