Sir. J. N. Wallace has received news that his father, Sir. J. Butt Wallace,, died at his residence in-Piedmont, California, on 6th August. .

Sir. John Poland,, who. died in Auckland on Friday, at the age of 85 years, was a very old colonist, and a wellluiown resident of Tuakau. He arrived in 3few Zealand from Ireland in 1863. by the ship Ganges, and shortly, afterwards settled at Tuakau, where he resided until, a few years ago,.; when h« went to Auckland to live. /Mr. Poland had a large family of fourteen children, of whom those now living are: Mr. SI. Poland, of Ellerslie; Sir. J. J. Poland, Onewhero; Mr. H. Poland, M.P., Paeroa; Mr. W. Poland, Pukekawa; Mr. T.: Poland, Maungaturoto; Mrs. V, Lindberg, Pukekawa,. and Mr. J. J, Keaney, Manawaru
