The Hon. G. W. Russell, of Christchurch, is at present on a visit to Wellington.

The Hon. C. J. Parr, Minister of Education, who last week suffered a relapse of influenza, has recovered sufficiently to enable him to resume his duties.

The death is announced from Danedin of Mr. H. V. Hoddock, timber merchant, aged 75 years.

The death occurred at a private hospital on Saturday night of Mr. Walter Brown, third son of the late Mr. Samuel Brown, formerly Mayor of Wellington. The late Mr. W. Brown was educated at Wellington College, and after taking a course at Lincoln Agricultural he returned to Wellington -and 'joined the firm of S. Brown and Co. Latterly, owing to ill-health, he lived in retirement at Titahi Bay. He leaves a widow, a daughter of Mr. A. H. Wright, Commissioner of Police.

One of New Zealand's earliest colonists, Mr. B. Gahagan, passed away in Christchurch on Thursday' last, at the age of 88 years. He was born in London in 1835, and shortly after the family sailed for Australia, settling in Adelaide. In the year 1848, with his parents, he came to New Zealand in a whaling vessel, and after a voyage of six weeks from Australia, landed in the Bay of Islands. The late Mr. Gahagan is survived by six daughters and four sons, Mrs. A. A. Whitelaw, of Berhampore, being a daughter of the deceased.
