LEAGUE FOOTBALL
CANTERBURY EASILY DEFEATS
WELLINGTON.
(BY TELEORAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.)
CHRISTCHURCH, 4th August, The Wellington and Canterbury Rugby League teams met this afternoon at English Park in fine but dull weather. Canterbury kicked off against the wind, and the game opened in a fast fashion. Exchanges of long kicks ended in Canterbury's advantage, and a fine passing bout in Canterbury's twentyfive ended in Christensen scoring; Saunder s failed to goal. Wellington went right up-field to the. corner, where Whittington dived over; Greer's kick at goal failed. This left the score even. Wellington was given a free kick in a fair position from which Cudby goaled. A fast passing rush from half-way saw Kelly race over in the corner, most of the backs having handled the ball; Andrews failed with the kick. Canterbury kept up the pressure, and the ball went out to Kelly on the wing, and he scored; Coomber's kick missed. Half-time sounded soon after with the scores: Canterbury, 9; Wellington, 5. Both sides fought strenuously in the second spell, but Canterbury proved superior both back and forward. Wellington defended solidly for a while, when Christensen made a great run and got over; Coomber converted. A great forward rush let the ball out to Kelly, and from him Lynskey got the ball and scored. Coomber failed to add the major points. Canterbury kept Wellington busy for several minutes, and in the end Clegg got over, and Coomber's kick hit the bar. Clegg scored again after a fine run by Davidson. The next try went to Woodgate, and Sanderson also got over. The game ended: Canterbury 29; Wellington, 5. •
