BROWN SHIELD RETAINED

'AUCKLAND'S SUBSTANTIAL VICTORY OVER WANGANUI.

(»I TSLEOSAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.)

AUCKLAND, sth August. In the Brown Shield match Auckland (holders) defeated Wanganui' by 10 goals to I— a record for the Shield contests. The weather was fine, but the ground was soft and slushy. Auckland played with combination, feeding their forwards with judgment, Ihe pace of the Auckland forwards was the chief factor in the result. Auckland showed superiority from the start, the score being 5-0 at halftime. Wanganui showed to better advantage in the second half, and at times were dangerous, but they failed to pierce the defence until just before the final whistle. The first score came soon after the start. From a throw-in Innes received from Dacre, and sped down the line, centring for Knott to shoot straight into the goal. The attack was maintained, and Williams shot a good goal from an acute angle. MGorram cleared and shot, but Knott intercepted and scored Auckland's third goal.- The northerners became more assertive, and C. Dacre, drawing the defence, dispatched to Tremain, who shot clean and hard at the goal. Cooper and M'Dougall broke away, but the local forwards were too good, and Knott carried up-field with Tremain and shot at goal.

After half-time Wanganui showed to much greater advantage, and for some minutes the forwards, not too well supported by the half-backs, kept the large crowd delighted with flashes of, combined work, Stoddart having two shots which went wide. From a run by Cooper Auckland again attacked, Dacre and Tremain in turn shooting goals following combined rushes. A sustained invasion ended in Dacre notching the eighth goal. Wanganui were fighting a hard but hopeless game, and lost their dash. Knott took the ball from midfield, outpacing the opposition, and sent to Tremain, who scored. Wanganui got under way quickly, and Cooper had another shot, which was cleared by Craxton, when Beckett came in. and lodged a good stinging goal for Wanganui.
