PALMERSTON N., This Day.

Sir. William Frederick Hobbs, who passed away in Palmerston North last week, aged 92 years, had been a resident of New Zealand for seventy-fire years, and took part in the Maori wars. For forty years he worked on Mr. J. B. Adeane's estate at Takapau. His wifa died twenty-six years ago, but he is survived by eight daughters, one son, forty grandchildren, and eight great-grandchil-dren. The daughters are : Mesdames H. Limbrick (Waipawa), J. Williams (Wanganui), J. Cronin (Patea), C. Fargher (Onga Onga). J. Cosgrove (Palmerston North), M. Walker (Dannevirke), P. Bird (Foxton), and J. Tannion (Palmerston North), while the son is Mr.. F. Hobbs (Takapau). The premises of a tobacconist in. Main street were broken into in the early hours of Saturday morning, and cigarettes, to the value of 10s, and some coppers stolen. Access to the premises was obtained by a side window, which was forced open with a jemmy. The indications point to the thieves being youths. Attempts that proved unsuccessful wer«j also made to gain an entrance to- a grocer's shop, a music store, and another establishment in the Square. Although there is a considerable! amount of influenza in. tha district, tho cases are mostly of the mild type. At the local post office on Saturday ten. members of the staff out of 150 were absent owing to illness, while the average number of absentees from this causa I during- the past wee"k has been about 11. ,
