PRICE OF NEWSPAPERS

INCREASES NOTIFIED IN LONDON.

In notifying on 23rd May an increase in the price of daily papers, the iondon "Daily Telegraph" said that the proprietors regretted the need for raising the price from l£d, especially aY they had' hoped that the next changein the price of the paper, which was the pioneer of the penny press, would be, back to the popular price. But after a year's experiment at Hd, they were compelled t6 revert to 2d. In justification of the decision, they reminded readers that all the London 'daily newspapers were now sold at double their. pre-war price, and that even this difference is not equal to the rise in publishing costs. Newsprint—the paper used in the printing of a journal—which is the chief item in these costs, is now more than double its price in 1914. Wages, and all the miscellaneous items which come into the cost of newspaper production, have also greatly increased compared with eight years agq.
