PARAMOUNT AND ARTCRAFT.
Whirlwind action, with bright spots of romance, mark the picture screening at the Paramount and Arteraft Theatres today. "For Bis; Stakes" is a Fox production, starring Tom Mix. It is replete with adventure. It has a love story too of exceeding charm. The photoplay is a wholesome tale of the way of a man with a maid. The sands and hills of Arizona," the clear skies, the outdoor life—all are here. The acting of Tom Mix—in fact, of the entire cast— is of the highest order. Tom's riding, shooting, and ropethrowing lone- ago placed him in the front rank of Western screen actors. His horse, Tony, deserves no little praise if we are to include all those who gave praiseworthy performances. This animal does everything but talk. The photography is above the average, the movement of the story never lags,, the direction throughout is good, and there are. several surprises. that will not be described here,' for they are too good to bo spoiled by foreknowledge. Probably themost outstanding single incident is a prairie fire, through which Tom Mix rides to'save his sweetheart. The second feature j stars John Gilbert in "Calvert's Valley," a story by Margaret Prescott Montague, in which the elements of mystery, adventure, and romance are said_ to be skilfully blended. Special musical programmes are a. feature at both theatres.
