COAL SUPPLIES
SHIPMENT FOR WELLINGTON.
Replying to a question asked in the House of Representatives this afternoon by Mr. A. L. Monteith (Wellington East), the Minister of Mines, the Hon. J. G. Anderson, denied-that there had been an increase in the price of State coal of approximately 18 per cent. A short time ago, the Minister stated, the Department realised j'lat there was likely to be a shortage in Wellington, and made arrangements for supplies from the Waikato and State mines, one of the objects being to give supplies to gas companies. To-day, the only coal in the State depot was Waikato coal, retailed at 3s 9d per cwt. in the city, and 4s in the suburbs, the same as was being charged by the companies. This morning he received advice that it was hoped to dispatch a vessel to the West Coast to-day, and she was expected to return with 400 tons of coal on Monday. Ihe Minister stated.that the Department was selling the coal at the'least possible price to return a slight profit, but was unable to sell at the same price as was charged for State coal.
