WAR MEMORIALS
SITE PUECHASED AT GRAVENSTAPEL.
In a communication to the Minister of Defence, the High Commissioner for New Zealand (Sir James Allen) states that early in June the purchase was completed of land at Gravenstafel, the scene of one of the last battles in which the New Zealand forces were engaged, for the erection of a war memorial. The site belonged to five owners only four of whom had come to terms but the land actually acquired was sufncient for the purposes of the proposed memorial. The High Commissioner was hopeful of acquiring the remaining portion, which is necessary in order to preserve the amenities of the memorial at a later date. The total cost of the" land acquired was equivalent to £83 7s. The High Commissioner also states that ho has purchased a site for a war memorial at Messines. Tho purchases are in accordance with authority given by Parliament two or three years ago.
