MR. BRUCE REPLIES
PEACE HIS MAIN PURPOSE
EMPIRE .DEFENCE AS A PRAC-
TICAL SCHEME.

MELBOURNE, This Bay. . Mr. Bruce, replying to the Imperial Conference debate, said ho had never listened td a discussion in which there were such misconceptions of the issues involved. The Opposition had endeavoured to make tho issue one of war or peace. His purpose was to strive for peace, and one method Was by pressing the claims at the Conference for the League of Nations. The world's peace was largely dependent on Britain's foreign po_Ticy; yet Labour did not want to participate in it. Though they professed, love for their fellow-men, instead they preferred the selfish policy of isolation. He advocated the Empire defence scheme because it was practical. Australia must be defended; but the country would be hopelessly overburdened unless a scheme was formulated in conjunction with another Power.
Referring to the Ruhr and reparations, he said that for France to remain in the Ruin', perpetuating another Alsace-Lor-raine, would be a, great tragedy. He agreed with Mr. Baldwin that Germany should; make reparation in full. A motion to print the Imperial Conference agenda paper was carried on the voices..
