ONGARUE DISASTER
THE COMMISSION OF INQUIRY.

TAUMARUNUI, This Day. Members of the Commission appointed to inquire into the Ongarue railway disaster journey by special train as far as Poro-o-Tarao, 29 miles from Taumarunui, this morning ■ for the purpose of inspecting the locality where the catastrophe occured. The party, which was large, consisted of Messrs. W. G. Biddell (chairman of the Commission), J Marchbanks (engineer to the Wellington Harbour Board), J. P. Maxwell (civil engineer), J. Jones (Assistant Engineer of .New Zealand Railways), W. l< Davidson (District Engineer), E. E. Gillon (Mechanical Engineer New Zealand Kailways), H. Sterling (representing the Kailway Department on the inquiry), and A. S. Laird (District Coroner). Dr Henderson, the assistant director of the geological branch, left the train at Ongarue for the purpose of making a geological examination of the ground at the scene of the accident. The party stopped at this locality on the return journey, and made a general survey of the line and cutting from various angles. ' • . .
The party returned to Taumarunui at lo clock, and the inquiry will commence at 2 p.m. -■ .
