OTIRA TUNNEL OPENING

HOKITIKA, This Day The Westland branch of the Canterbury . Progress League has accepted an invitation from the parent body to attend a banquet in Christchuroh on the 4th August to -celebrate the opening of the Arthur's Pass Tunnel, .the president and secretary being deputed to attend. Ihe branch agreed unamimously to support the celebrations in Greymouth on 4th -August,- and the Mayor' is to be asked to declare a public holiday Itwas decided that Hokitika sho&ld or"anise a gala day at the close of the session to celebrate the event, and to invite Ministers and members of Parlia' ment to ■function. It was resolved to defer the children s visit to the tun nel till the end of October, when a mon stor school excursion will- be organised. Ihe meeting supported a. prouosil t™, the Marlborough Chamber VSn^ to urge the completion of the GlenhbpeBlenbeim road via iophouse, reducing the motor trip from Westland to Marfi borough to less than twelve hours
