CRICKET FINANCE

.WELLINGTON ASSOCIATION'S

POSITION

STATEMENT BY TREASURER,

" The committee has every reason to feel satisfied with the financial results of its labours during the 1922-23 season, ■which proved to be a very busy •one owing to the presence of the M.C.C. team, which played three matches in Wellington," states the treasurer of the Wellington Cricket Association (Mr F, M. Martin) in submitting thfe ' statement of income and expenditure and the bal-ance-sheet for the past season. "It is very doubtful if the profit on the year's wdrking funds has ever been excesded, and it is certain that the-accumulated funds have never reached' so high, a figure. The present position is very different from what it was wheii the writer first took office ten year's ago. 1 Then the assets fell short of the liabilities by £435j and the overdraft limit at the bank had been reached."

. Ah analysis of the accounts Shows that the- profit of £407 9s 3d is largely due to the financial success of the match against Auckland, which ran into four days, and produced, a gross gate of £691 0s lOd. The profit amounted to £356 14a 3d,,-of which the association's share wa3 £231 17s 3d. The profit was nearly sufficient to meet the expenses of the Southern tour, £242 19s Id. As against that expenditure, £75 Is lid represented Wellington's share-'of the gate in the btago and Canterbury matches.-.'The- Northern tour -was much'interfered with'by -bad weather, and only : one of the four matches arranged was brought to a conclusion.

_ The two Test matches played in Wellington resulted in a net profit 7 to the Aew Zealand Cricket Council of £555 6s 6d. The M.C.C.. match against Wellington resulted in a less of £4 9s loi The Wellington Association, undev the arrangement made with the New Zealand Uicket Council, is to receive 16 per centof the net profits, namely £55 10s 7d. As regards the Wellington match, the: association, in the first Wace. made an offer of £400 to run the match itself. Under' the circumstances, it is very fortunate that this offer, was rejected, as. in that event it would have been out of pocket to the extent of £230. The net gate trom championship matches was £130 14s 9d, as against £104 the previous season. Receipts frofli entrance" feeSi practice wickets, and. net ground . fees amounted to £295 3s 3d, as against £235 Is tA in 1921-22—ah increase due to the larger number of entries in the competitions. ' • .' ■-.■■■ , v

lhe accumulated funds of the association now amount to £1305 lls 3d, of which £111 Us represents material, the amount on deposit at the Savings Bank is £653 15s 24, and £379 18s is on current account at the Bank of New Zealand As interest on.'Savings Bank deposits over £500 is.only 3*. per cent.,',' states , the treasurer, "it-is-a matter for tha ' committee to decide on alternative moth--OQ6 of investment." .'- ■ '

. The excess of income over expenditure is shown as £497 9s 3d. Amounts in the bank total £1033 13s 2d. "It would appear from the balance-sheet," states Uietpasurer, "that, 1 with careful administration, there is nothing to prevent the finances of the association being maintamed without having recourse to the savings ,of past, years." ■• With ordinary luck in- the way of weather, any loss made m one season should be made up | in tne following year."- ■• .-. --.••"
