OPENING OF KARORI BRANCH, U.A.O.D.

The dedication of Mewbum Lodge,. No. 90 on the roll of lodges under the jurisdiction of the Grand Lodge of.the NorthIsland of New Zealand, was the occasion of a lwge gathering at the Methodist Schoolroom, Karori, on Wednesday evening. Proceedings opened with the appointment of officers to carry out the initiation ceremony, these being drawn from the various city and suburban lodges a3 follow:—J.P.A., Bro. S. S. Howan (Coronation); A.D., Bro. I. - Domb (Pacific); V.A., Bro. ,S. Fraser (Excelsior); Secretary, Bro. F. Mawhinnew (Pacific); Treasurer, Bro. F. Lyall (Pacific); 1.G., Bro. H. J. Rod (Coronation); 0.G., Bro. 'C. it. Jorgenson (Excelsior); Organist, Sro. J. F. Kuch (Pacific); A.D.B.'s, Bros. H. Bramley (Holly) and "T. Hcarn (Pacific), V.A.B.'s, Bros. A. G. Jennings and R. Hall (Excelsior); Master of Ceremonies, Bro. N. Ingram (Coronation). The initiation ceremony was carried out in a very impressive manner.

Grand Vice President Bro.. L. Price then took the chair, and was supported by Grand 1 Secretary Bro. J. N. Grant, P.G.P. Bro. R. P. Flanagan, D.P. Bro. Benge, Bro. Fisher, and many past officers. The opening ceremony -was proceeded with, and the new lodge dedicateo.to the cause of Druidism. Letters and telegrams were received from grand lodge ofneers and others unable to be present. Grand President Bro. G. Tudehope, of Albion Lodge, Napier, telegraphed his congratulations and good wishes. Grand Vice President Bro. Price, in his address to the members, said that the name Mewburn was indeed a happy choice, because it was a name revered by members of the Order throughout the Dominion., The late P.G.P. Bro. A. Mewburn, of Ponsonby Lodge, Auckland, and later a resident of Wanganui, had rendered yeoman . service to the Order and friendly society work as a whole. He possessed to an exceptional degree a a combination of. those qualities which make for a sound advocate and good citizen. His death was a. severe blow to the society, but much consolation was derived from, the knowledge that the fine example set by him was not being lost '-sight-of. -Bro. Price assured new entrants that if they did their best to live up to the "Mewbiirn standard," their future would indeed be bright. The election of officers of the new lodge resulted as follow:—A.D., Bro. Domb; Sec, Bro. F. Lyall (appointed by the G.L. Executive); J.P.A. Bro. E. Cole; V.A,,' Bro. J. Brownlee; Treasurer, Bro. A. R. Brokenshire;'l.G., Bro J. Watchman; Q.G.; Bro. T. N. Cox; A.D.B.'s, Bros. Gregory and Barden ; V.A.B.'s, Bros. Kennedy and Crawford ; pianist, Bro. A. D. Carpenter; trustees Bros. A. .J. Cathie, E. A. Lewer, and A. J.- Nielson; auditors, P.S. Bro. W: M'Laughlin and P.S. Bro. F. Mawhinney, G.L. Auditor. ■ The ofneers were then installed, by the District, President Bro. J.. Benge, assisted by P.D.P. Bro. N. Ingram. Mrs.., Mewburn, of Wanganui, telegra'ped her approval of the. lodge being named to perpetuate the memory of her late husband. .
