AMALGAMATION QUESTION.

DANNEVIRKE, This Day. . The conference of delegates of county councils from Waipawa to Masterton was held at Dannevirke to discuss the ques.tion of county amalgamation. Mr E. A. Hansom, M.P., and Mr. A. E. Jull,, chairman of the Counties ' Association,, and the counties' representative on the Main Highways Board, were present. Delegates expressed varying views, some favouring amalgamation and some a readjustment of boundaries. Some were perfectly satisfied with existing conditions. It was explained that no measure of compulsion was contained in the Minister's latest proposals, Conference decided : "That, while this conference is ii favour of legislation that will give adjoining counties power to amalgamate, we are not in favour of any compulsory measures as long as subsidies are not diminished." .
