AT THE WINTER SHOW

TE AUTE DEFEATS WANGANUI COLLEGE.

(BY TELEGRAPH.) (PI'.OM OUR SprCIAI. REPORTERS.) PALMERSTOIn N., 20th June. Fine weather was experienced for the whole of People's ■ Day, but conditions under foot were very wet. The chief attractions of the afternoon were the Te Aute-Wanganui football matches. Tho Native college won both games. Of the two, the better exhibition of football 'was seen in the junior game, which Te Aute won by 23 points against 3. The 'Wanganui College team was just strong enough to show up the play of Te Aute. ■The packs were fairly evenly matched, ibut Te Aute backs were on their own, and their handling of the greasy ball and tackling on the muddy, slippery ground was a treat to see. . The senior wa,tch was won by To Aute by 14 to 6, :Iml it was a much harder struggle than the score indicates. Wanganui had •a strong, heavy pack, always on the ball, and they did not give the Te Aute .backs much chance for novelties. The .Wanganui tackling was a feature of the 'game, but the Native boys were at a, disadvantage in the forwards. They marie up for this in the backs, and whenever their forwards made an effort the backs were there. At half-time Te ;Aute had a converted try to their credit, iwhile Wanganui had an unconverted try and a penalty goal. On the change over To Auto had the favour of what wind there was, and the advantage on a ground far from flat, and they took every opportunity. It was a great battle, largely between tl; forwards, and the better team won. ; There was a huge- attendance, and late-comers had difficulty in finding any placo from which the matches could be seen. At the same time the various halls and sideshows, etc., were full all the afternoon. The State Forest Service had a big stall in tho Hall of Industries, making a feature of seedling trees of sorts suitable for plantations, and it attracted considerable attention. PALMERSTON N., This Day. ■ The good weather which has characterised the past two days broke this morning, and light rain i s falling, making conditions wet and uncomfortable generally. Tho morning was devoted to judging Ayrshire pedigree cattle, which later were offered at sale, and lectures and demonstrations with machinery, etc. There was a good attendance. It is announced that yesterday's takings were over £660—a record.
