It will be noted that while Samoan imports have fallon considerably since ltf<iU, exports showed a considerable recovery m 1922, and the adverse balance of trade of £167,353 in 1921 lias been changed i° a favourable balance of £82,671 in . The value of Samoan imports for 1922 included: United Kingdom, £14,202 : New Zealand, £82,595; Australia, £104,663, United State of America, £63,345 In comparison vdili Australia, thi* Dominion enjoys a relatively small proportion of tho trade in the following goods: Tobacco, ba^s and sacks, boots and shoes drapery, l»ather, matches, -paner, and stationery, biscuits, flour, jams etc rice, suprar, and vegetables. There aii undoubtedly good reasons for our inability to compete successfully in some of these lines,, but a better knowledge of tha trade ottering may stimulate our traders towards sivinp: this market closer attention. Our relative success in such lines as drugs and chemicals, metal manufactures, bacon and ham, butter, meat, potatoes, and onions, soap, and timber, make pleasant reading. Samoan exports for 1922 were sent mainly to tho following countries:—United Knifjdom, £86,298; New Zealand, £12.. ;ft7?Dlt^ d Sfaf e6 ' £32-5«8; Holland, HAlo' 1 °enmark. £118,562; GermaDy! ri,o,-£ 5, 8i,. Cocoa knus (£44,513) and copra (±,319.333) acounted for substantially the whole value of tho export trade. The only other item worthy of mention was hides to a value of £539. ■
