About 10,000 tons of rock was dislodged from Paritutu, New Plymouth, on Monday morning, when another big shot was fired in connection with the quarrying operations for atone for the extension of the breakwater and reclamation works, states the "Taranaki Herald." The charge consisted of a ton of explosive, and had been lodged at the head of a. tunnel driven, from the eastern face. Practically all the rock dislodged was removed from the top, and from now on it will be impossible to climb the old landmark by the usual route, the upper portion of the rock having been in parts blasted away. The officials were entirely satisfied with the results of the shot. The major portion of the stone is too small for use on the breakwater extension, but this was expected, as it has been necessary to remove the stone high up in order to work lower down in the quarry without danger. In doing this the shot was successful, and the engineer (Mr. Lewson) stated that sufficient batter had now bsen secured on the quarry face to permit the quarrying of a splendid outcrop of solid stone near the base of the pinnacle, which, to all appearance, should come away in. kt-ge blocks very guitabia for use oh ihe 8-ieaaioa...
