Lecturing on Socialism, Dr. Macnamara, a former Secretary to the British Admiralty, said it did not require large political insight to foresee that, unless the growth of the teaching of Carl Marx and the growth of the Socialist Party were checked, the return of a Socialist • Cabinet was a certainty. A Socialist 1 Government must inevitably mean bitter disillusionment and bitter disappointment. Socialism would land our people in a worse condition than they were in to-day. Public control had a knack of being pretty costly, and the Socialist policy would mean an increase in taxation by at least 50 per cent., and probably more. That was quite out of the question. Then the Socialists advocated a capital levy, not realising how this would necessarily Imve evil results upon industry, and, therefore, upon employment. The more one tried to get down to the" idea of a Socialist State, the more one got down to the "brass tacks," as the. American said, of the difficulties that confronted us, the sooner one would get down to the idea of a first-class lunatic asylum..
