UTAH AGAINST CIGARETTES
TJtah has a so-called antl-cigarelte law which, among other things, prohibits smoking of any kind in public places. A sudden outburst of activity on the part of local; deputy sheriffs led to the arrest recently of several citizens who were having an after-dinner smoke in a restaurant in Salt Lake City. 'The first crusade was followed by another on the succeeding day, when several other persons, judged by the peace officers to'be offenders against the law, were taken into custody. The activity on the part of the ■deputy sheriffs led very promptly to the formation by prominent citizens of a Freemen's League, whose object is to secure the repeal of the anti-cigarette legislation. A mass meeting of citizens in Salt Lake City to protest against the obnoxious legislation was very largely attended, and steam whistles Were blown in sympathy with the new movement. The incident furnishes another illustration of the disposition so prevalent in recent times of people to regulate the action of their, fellow citizens. It has long been a matter of minor prophecy that tobacco would follow other cheering things in life if a certain type of legislator could have, his way, and there appears to be no reason why coffee, tea, or any other alleviator of the ills of life should be excepted from the rage of regulators of other people's private conduct..
