The appointment of Mr. E. S. Baldwin as Vice-Consul for the Argentine Republic at Wellington is provisionally recognised in a notice published in this week's "Gazette."

Acting-Detective J. Hunt, -who met with an accident while attempting to cross a stream at Martinborough a few months ago, recently underwent an operation at the Wellington Hospital, and is now progressing satisfactorily.

In appreciation of the services he rendered in the interests of lower-grade cricketers in Wellington, Mr. J. Reid, who is now residing in Hamilton, has received a handsome set of cutlery, the gift of the junior cricketers of Wellington.

Mr. J. M. Dale, ex-councillor, has been appointed by the City Council as a Renewal Fund Commissioner in place of the late Mr. H. Buddie. He has also been appointed the council's assessor in compensation claims under the Public Works Act.

Mr. J. M. Bertram, the highest unsuccessful candidate- at the lecent Hospital and Charitable Aid Board election, is to be requested by the City Council to fill the vacancy on the board caused through the resignation of Mr. George Shiirtcliffe.

Mr. W. Saunderson Cooper, who lately held the position of Resident Commissioner, Savaii, has returned to New Zealand on three months furlough, after an official connection with Samoa of two and a half years. Mr. Cooper is now visiting Wellington.

The death occurred on Wednesday morning at Dannevirke of Mr. W. H. Drinkwater, one of the best known men in the town. With the exception of a period spent in Taranaki, the late Mr. Drinkwater had resided in Dannevirke nearly all his life. Keenly interested in football, he was an enthusiastic supporter of the Excelsior Club, and was a member of the Management Committee of the Dannevirke Rugby Sub-Union. He was also a bowler, and a member of the Dannevirke Bowling Club. Deceased is survived by his wido'.v, three sons, and one daughter.

Guests of honour at last night's meeting of the City Council were Alderman Jenkinson, Mayor of Hamilton, a suburb of Brisbane, and an ex-Mayor of Brisbane; and Mr. Cadbury, of the firm of Cadbury Brothers, England. In expressing a welcome to the visitors, the Mayor (Mr. R. A. Wright, M.P.) said tliat Mr. Jenkinson had collected about £1,000,000 during the war for war funds, and that he held more public offices, possibly, than any other man South of the Line. Mr. Cadbury, as an ex-Mayor of Birmingham, had held_ office in a town of almost a million inhabitants. In reply, Mr. Jenkinson mentioned that the present Mayor of Brisbane was a New Zealander, Mr. Diddams. Both gentlemen expressed pleasure at being present and appreciation of the hospitality accorded them. They were asked by the Mayor to convey Wellington's respect to their respective municipalities.
