AN EXPLORER RETURNS
Mr. Samuel Turner, F.R.G.S., of Wellington, has returned to-day from explorations in the Tutoko Region, in the Fiord district. He climbed Mount Tutoko to within 400 feet, but was compelled to return, although so near the peak, through circumstances beyond his control. He makes light of his mountaineering exploit, stating to "The Post" that the value of his work lies in the discovery of unexplored lakes and valleys and other natural features. He discovered a pass, not moro ,than 4000 feet above sea level, which will enable tourists to visit perfectly wonderful country, unique in all the. world, and to do it within fourteen days from Dunedin and back. There were SO miles of icefields, and most extraordinary mountain features. He spent nine weeks in the district on this occasion, and spent over £1000 on the trip. Altogether he has spents ei.eht montlis exploring around and on Tutoko.
