REVIEW OF IMPORTANT, WORKS

FOB NEXT TWO YEARS.

The installation of th~e Mayor and the election of committees of the City Counj^jl took place at a meeting in the Counjyij Chambers at noon to-day. There was gl large attendance of the general public, (find the following councillors were present A. M'Vicar, Messrs. W. J. W. H. Bennett, W. J. GauSln, T. Forsythj F. Meadowcroft, H. D. Bennett, G. Mitchell, M. M. F. Luckie, «8. G. H. Burn, J. Aston, A. W. Parton, -jf, Burns, C. H. Chapman, and A. L. Sfcfonteith, M.P.. : Mrs. Wright was seated -Oft the dais beside t&a Mayor (Mr. R. A. fSVright, M.P.). Councillor Luckie was voted to the ichair, while the Mayor was sworn in, (and signed the customary written declaration. On behalf of the council, Councillor •xLuckie congratulated the Mayor upon nhis reinstalment. Many important works ' ,would require the guiding hand of the ' Mayor in the ensuing two years, he said. tJAlready he had performed valuable services, and the electors, in recognition of 'these services, had elected him for a 'further term of office. He congratulated 'ioth Mr. Wright and Mrs. Wright upon ithat honour. After briefly returning thanks, Mr. nVVright congratulated the re-elected councillors upon their success at the poll, and also the new councillors, to whom he ■ -.expressed a welcome. The fact -that the old' councillors who had contested their seats had all been returned showed that they had given satisfaction in the past. He spoke of the" satisfactory results achieved last year in the face of financial obstacles, and said that tho programme for the ensuing year would be a tyery full one. He proceeded to detail the various taatters of municipal enterprise that ,wonld have to-be dealt with, as outlined in;an interview with "The Post" some days ago. Amongst the more important works would be the completion of the Orpngorongo waterworks scheme, which Bhould.be finished probably about the.beeininng of the new year, or by Easter at the latest. Contingent upon that was the extension of the pipe line from Waimui! to the Karori reservoir, and the drainage and water reticulation of Ons-low-and Karori. -The new power house (would also be completed about the beginning of nest year, relieving the difficulty in regard to power and lighting that 'Baa cawed so much trouble last waiter! and wouldbe still more troublesome thfe winter. The city was promised that the Mangahao scheme would be ready by June, 1924, and the municipal electrical concerns would then havo to be connected up. A number of new tern routos had been authorised and should W completed'in. the new council^ term ioroffice. -.He';also anticipated that in the next two years the:'.baths':problem would be overcome. Other matters were the election of a new pavilion at the Basin Eeserve and general improvement ot the reserves; the provision of additional conveniences in various parts of the city, which wertj sadly needed; and the construction of the wall to combat the-aand-drift problem at Lyall Bay, which Should- be finished this year. The only solutdon he could see of the fishing difficulty at Island Bay was t<u place someone in charge of the beach. The fishermen had been promised facilities for .landing and treating their fish, and the Marine Department, had. provided for certain work to be carried out in conijunctiott with the council. That matter would cbnie before the council at a> yery early date. . , Another problem for solution was that -.jpf: improved access to Kelburn. ProIpejrfry had been purchased near_ Mount «treet, and he expressed the opinion'that foetter access by way of that thoroughifaro would liave to be provided. Ceritain portions of the city were practically in darkness, and without sanitary con\venifiiicesi on account of the absence o£ jwater and drainage and lighting ser.vices. He mentioned the Seatoun 'heights, Happy Valley, and Melrose. iThe proposal for the boring of another funnel through Mouni Victoria was now in the hands of an engineer, who was ipreparing plans for submission to the 'council. There was also an insistent deimand'for more, children's- play areas, \Taking things all round, councillors ;would agree that the progrymne was a very full one. There were other matters that would have to be dealt with by the various committees. In conclusion, Mr. Wright thanked jtlie councillors for their co-operation fluring the last two years, and said he selfc assured of their continued support and assistance in the present term. The next two years would be » period of 'hard work, and he hoped they would lie: two years of successful endeavour.
