ACCLIMATISATION

BUSINESS BEFORE SOCIETY.

The monthly meeting of the Wellington Acclimatisation Society was held last evening. Mr. L. O. H. Tripp presided.

The Internal Affairs Department wrote outlining decisions as the outcome of the recent conference to discuss depredations 'by deer. As the society was ' not concerned in the recommendations, having culled its herd to the extent of some 3000 deer, no action was considered necessary, and the district was not mentioned by the Department as one where any action was necessaiy.

An inquiry was made by Mr. R. L. Levin, of Feilding, as to shooting pukeko, which,' he said, had been protected by him for some twelve years, and were now so numerous that they were likely to become a nuisance. The ranger was asked to report. The fact that a fine of £25 and costß £5 had been inflicted, together with a warning that unless steps were taken to check sawdust being allowed into the Hautapu River an indefinite series of fines might be inflicted, on the Egmont Box Company, was reported from Taihape. The society considered this satisfactory. Reports on the supply of game were encouraging. The ranger at Eketahuna said hares ware plentiful throughout Wairarapa and Bush districts. Quail were [airly prevalent in Rangitikei. Pheasants were on the_ increase in areas where they had been liberated. Over 1000 licenses had been issued. Mr. H. J. Diiigan, of Wanganui, reported a bag of 146 ducks and three swane to nine guns for one day. Mallard, the writer stated, had done well, but were shy. Black toal, at one time plentiful, appeared to be extinct, Mr. Duigan also stated that it was a mistake to liberate pheasants on the old lieaton Park Estate at Bulls, as poison for rabbits was being laid plentifully, and would kill any pheasants. Messrs. Tripp, Whitty, and Flemming were selected by ballot to remain on the new council. The other members will be available for election at the annual meeting on 30tb May.
