WAR MEMORIAL

THE CANVASS FOR FUNDS

GRATIFYING AND ENCOURAGING RESPONSE.

It is officially stated by the Wellington Citizens' War Memorial Committee that the canvass for funds, which has been in progress during the past fortnight, has met with a very gratifying and encouraging response. Numsrous cheques have already received for substantial amounts, while assurances have been recevied that still m^ry rr.ore will bo forthcoming. At two wettings of members of the War Memorial Committee and leaders of sections held since the canvass commenced, it was reported by individual canvassers ;is>d ttiims that they had been met with imi-ked sympathy and cordiality in almost every case, and they were very much imprwted and encouraged by the fact. At a meeting of the combined committees, held last evening-, satisfaction was expressed with the donations obtained, >.nd prr.nvses of support given, and it was retnlved to carry on the campaign until the whole field hag been exhausted. Fur the purpose of regularly reporting progress and organising meetings of sections, meetings of the combined conirnittes wil: Hft held in No. 1 Committee-room, Tcwn Hail, on every Tuesday evening. It having been reported that a certain amount of confusion exists us *o what the funds now being collooted_ by the Citizens' War Memorial CowmJitef are to be devoted to, the committee wishes to state authoritatively that 't is raising funds solely for the -erection of a cenotaph, or some such memorial in commemoratiq'n of the 1700 men of Wellington who fell in the Great War, and that the committee's effortß are in no way connected with any other project. All funds received by the committee, therefore, will be applied accordingly.
