A MINISTER SURPRISED
To a deputation to-day the Minister of Public "Works expresses! surprise that "a wealthy country like.the Hutt" did not employ a permanent engineer. He recognise.d. he said, that it was none of his business, but at the same time he though that the county should have its own engineer. The county had asked for a subsidy towards a new bridge. The estimated cost of that bridge included engineering charges. It would be just as well for the county to understand that the Government never contributed towards engineering charges. In reckoning the amount of the subsidy the engineering charges would have to be deducted from the total cost. That rule had been laid down, and he was not going to depart from it.
